How Often You Should Repaint Your Home

Has it been a while since you painted your house? Or can you not even remember the last time you had your house painted?

If you answered ‘yes’ to either of these questions then it’s a good idea to look at giving your home a facelift.

But, while we enjoy painting, we understand that it’s not the quickest and simplest task in the world. With having to move and cover all of your furnishings, it can be quite annoying. So, it’s easy to understand why you wouldn’t want to do it more often than necessary.

We have put together a list of estimates of how often you should repaint your home and factors that can impact how long it lasts.

House Exterior

Let’s start with the biggest job: the exterior paint job.

The exterior of your home is much more exposed to harsh Australian weather conditions. This causes the paint to age more quickly than that of your interior.

The quality of your exterior paint can also impact your curb appeal, so it’s important to keep it looking good.

One of the first factors that can impact how long your paint lasts is the materials that it’s applied to. On average, your exterior paint should last between 5 and 10 years, depending on the material.

You can refer to this brief guide below to see how long your exterior paint should last:

  • Wood siding – 3-7 years
  • Aluminium siding – 5 years
  • Stucco – 5-6 years
  • Cement fiberboard siding – 10-15 years
  • Brick – 15-20 years

The quality of your paint will also affect how long it lasts. When it comes to painting the outside of your house you should opt for durable, high-quality paints. It is also important to make sure you use the correct paint for your house’s material.

Interior

Your home’s interior is often well protected from the weather elements, and so should last longer than your exterior.

While we understand that due to the magnitude of the job you are likely to paint your whole interior at once, it is important to understand that each room’s paint will age at a different rate.

We use rooms for different purposes, and so they are each subject to varying levels of wear and tear.

If you’re looking for an average time length then we suggest that you repaint your interior approximately every 5 to 10 years. Some rooms will start to show signs of wear and tear quicker than this, while others will last a lot longer.

Bedrooms & Offices

Out of all the rooms in your home, your bedrooms and offices are subject to the least amount of physical impact and use. This means the paint should last the longest in these rooms.

Our bedrooms are often not used for much other than sleeping and changing outfits, while offices are used for sitting and working. So, the paint here should last a relatively long time.

That is unless you have young children who like to draw beautiful pictures on the walls. Most marks should come off with a little elbow grease, however, if not then you may need to give those walls a touch-up more often.

Ideally, the paint in these rooms should last between 7-10 years minimum before they start to show its age.

Living and Dining Rooms

While you likely use your living or dining room every day, you will generally spend your time in these rooms sitting, eating or chatting. You may also have the occasional dance party.

But even so, the walls don’t tend to be as heavily impacted. So, the paint lasts longer. These rooms can generally go at least 5 years before needing a fresh coat of paint.

Hallways

Our hallways are the highest traffic areas in our homes, and therefore are subject to the most wear and tear.

Especially if you have children, you are likely to start seeing chipped paint on the corners, dirty fingerprints and scuff marks down your hall and in your stairways within a few years.

To keep your house looking fresh, it’s a good idea to repaint or touch up these high-traffic areas every 2-3 years.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Your kitchen and bathroom are some of the busiest rooms in your house. They are also exposed to most substances.

Your kitchen is susceptible to food stains, smoke and steam, all of which can affect your paint over time. Your bathroom on the other hand is exposed to high levels of moisture and humidity, causing your paint to age quicker.

Due to this, if you want these areas to continue to look great then you should try to paint them every 3-4 years
